A DIY lab addressing biopolitical issues around the advancement of DTC (direct to consumer) genomic and microbiomic services, and the rising popularity of online health data sharing.
Health data sharing practices are often seen as a way to improve individuals' personal health and self-awareness, and an important leap towards the democratization of expert knowledge. At the same time, the volume of personal health data and medical records made available through the data sharing services raises important questions about data ownership and privacy. It remains unclear who really "owns" most of the health data shared online: is it the biological creator of this data, the providers of data sharing services, the healthcare authorities?
Rather than delivering any solutions or answers to these questions, the BYOP lab opens a generous space for everyone to experiment with their data and own their shit. The BYOP was performed by Markéta Dolejšová, Marc Dusseiler and I-chen Lai.
